‘Devi’ Documentary Screens in Nepal Theaters

By PMST US-Nepal | May 8, 2025

Kathmandu: The powerful documentary Devi, directed by journalist-turned-filmmaker Subina Shrestha, has been screened in theaters across Nepal since Baisakh 20. The 80-minute film tells the harrowing yet inspiring story of women who were victims of rape and sexual violence during Nepal’s People’s War.

Breaking from the norm in a country with little to no theatrical market for documentaries, Devi has managed to reach mainstream screens, following the path of other rare releases like Dhorpatan by Rajan Kathet and Sunir Pandey.

Not stopping at Kathmandu, director Shrestha has revealed plans for special screenings in cities such as Dhangadhi, Nepalgunj, Surkhet, Butwal, and Biratnagar—expanding the reach of this emotionally gripping narrative.

The story began when Shrestha met Devi Khadka while reporting as a journalist. After receiving Devi’s personal diary, Shrestha took on the responsibility of giving voice to the pain, strength, and justice-seeking journey of countless women who endured trauma during the war.

Devi has also garnered international attention, having been officially selected and screened at several international film festivals. This documentary stands as a landmark step toward social dialogue and recognition of wartime women’s issues in Nepal.
